Featured Project: Western Ave Studios (WAS) Complex
The Western Avenue Studios complex houses a vibrant arts community near the heart of downtown Lowell, MA. Comprising three converted brick mill buildings, the Western Avenue complex now provides studio, rehearsal, and gallery space for more than 180 working artists in all disciplines. A second phase of the project will add live/work space will be known as the Western Avenue Lofts.
The artists of WAS and the complex's owner, BPV Lowell, LLC were seeking to make a meaningful statement to the community about their commitment to sustainability. In addition, controlling energy costs was a critical issue in executing the WAS mission of offering affordable work/live space to support working artists. However, committing capital and time to a major sustainability initiative was not feasible. The historic nature of the complex provided another set of permitting and design challenges.
Solventerra provided the solution: a 197 KW Solventerra-owned solar system on the WAS rooftop and 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) providing competitively-priced clean energy to power over half of the WAS complex's annual demand for 20 years. Solventerra performed a comprehensive review of the building's energy infrastructure and energy needs then designed a customized solar photovoltaic system for the WAS rooftops that would provide affordable electricity for the complex and help reduce WAS's carbon footprint.
Solventerra managed all aspects of design, permitting, and construction with input from BPV Lowell and WAS artists to ensure that the system design was complementary to the use of the complex. All capital was provided by Solventerra and its financial partners so that WAS only pays for the electricity it consumes. Solventerra manages the system operations so that WAS receives the benefits of the solar system without the attendant maintenance hassle. As part of the project, Solventerra installed a kiosk in the lobby of the WAS complex so that artists and visitors can see for themselves how the Solventerra solar system is performing and providing clean, renewable energy to the community.
